A Little Bit of Color

I found a little bit of color in my yard after the rain. I am so glad to see something in bloom. More flowers are needed but now is not the time to do any planting. I need to get busy planning the fall and winter gardens. I am learning more about planning - something we learn through experience and what works for us.

The vincas were so full a couple of months ago and now they are straggly but with some color again. Yea!
I love begonias. Why? Because I can grow them so easily. They are beautiful performers and bloom and bloom. They did get stunted due to the draught we had but that is over now. They bounce beautifully. When I cut my plants back all of the cuttings go into a pot to make the next mound to plant. Just stick the cutting into the soil and watch them grow.

The four o'clocks are great performers. They have sprung back since we had rain.

This lantana that is growing wild is prettier than any that I have babied and tried to encourage blooming.

These zinnias are also great performers.

This is what topped off my Saturday night. A pina colada with whipped topping and of course the cherry. Mmmmmmm - so good. Sinful for something to taste that good.

What's Blooming and What's Not

The squash are looking puny due to the deluge of rain last week. They may make one or two more small pickings. Most of the garden is looking like this now. The ground has dried out and has hardened around all of the plants again. We are expecting rain today and that will help.

The smell of gardenia fills the air. I love that gardenia's look so delicate and soft.

This is my large dahlia. What happened? It looked so good just the other day when I took a photo. There is another bud coming up below this one.

First Garden

The weekend was awsome here on the Gulf Coast. With temps in the upper 70's, there were people taking in the sun on the beaches and in the gardens. I managed to get a move on doing some much needed outdoor work in the yard and garden. What a chore it was for this old lady - I dug me a flower bed and I mean dug. The grass was thick in the area out the back door along the backside of the house. This would be the south side of the house and receives an abundance of sun of least 7 hours. The dirt was rich black like blackgold, so I didn't need to add any amendants to the soil.

This is what I planted: gladiolas mixed colors, dahlia "Seattle"1-yellow/white and 1-deep red/white "Mystery Day", small dahlia "Blusette Pink", Mexican Heather, lantana's, ranuculus, and petunias. I believe this will yield me a very colorful garden.


All about the rest of the yard, the peach tree is covered in gorgeous pink blooms. The pear tree is full of white blooms and elsewhere in the yard the blueberries are blooming. I have a couple of flowering trees that I am not sure what they are so I am going to check them out.
