This and That

The pecan trees are dropping pecans left and right but they are still green. Walking in the yard at this point you are very likely to get bonked on the head with a nut. The trees are still loaded so I expect that I may have an abundance of pecans. Too bad I can't eat them and I absolutely love pecans especially during the holidays when everything is made with pecans. It is truly southerners delight.

If anyone wants me to ship them some pecans I will be happy to do so as long as you pay for shipping. I have eight trees - Stewart Pecans, one I have never heard of - Silver Queen and Paper Shell. I cannot tell the difference in the pecans or the trees. They are different - but I cannot identify which is which. I will send what I can if you request it.

Buddy is liking the pecans because the squirrels are having a feast right now as they prepare for the winter and have plenty for now too. The quirrels break them open and drop them to the ground and Buddy scarfs them up and runs to the house when he has a mouthful. If he's not grabbing a nut he is making a bee line to the pear tree where he quickly spots a pear on the ground and grabs and runs toward the house. You would think that it would make him sick. NOT. Buddy eats everything.

We are certainly into the summertime pattern of rain nearly everyday. Down here in the Mobile area we get an abundance each year and we love it and depend on it. You can watch the grass grow right now - needs cutting every week.

Along with our typical rain the Atlantic is beoming active which means hurricanes will be forming. Our first tropical system is expected to form and be named today. It is going to be imperitive that I get me some supplies soon. You don't want to be in the store trying to get supplies when we have one come into the Gulf. It is literally a MAD HOUSE people scrambling. Seems like nearly everyone waits till the last minute.

I hope I didn't bore you too much just rambling on. Wishing you all have a great day. Just for today - make it the best.

we have a stewart pecan tree too.. and you know I am a stewart right!

Ours only produces pecans for the squirrels they get them why they are still green and take off. I have never had one off this tree yet!

Hi Becca. I'm so glad to hear about Buddy. He's having a great time - and that's what matters.

And we are keeping our eye on the hurricanes, too. Some tropical waves are starting to form off the coast of Africa and that means we should be vigilant.

Hey Becca, I would love to COME down and get some Pecans when there are ready to gather!
SHUSHHHHH On that Hurricane talk!
Got my fingers crossed and prayers sent that we escape everything but a good tropical depression to bring the water table up! :)
I will prepare though!

I enjoy hearing what's going on down there. I sure hope storms goes out to sea or at least away from people.
Do you have to do anything special to the pecans before you use them?

I just can't imagine what it's like to worry about hurricanes. But here in California we have earthquakes, so I guess it's always something.

If you have good producers, I will come pick them up with my kids! No need to ship or pick them up!

And please do not be talking about hurricanes. Ugg I cannot do that again!

We have one huge pecan tree that provides shade for all the hydrangeas and other shade lovers. Unfortunately, the pecans are never edible and the squirrels take the rest. I probably should have the tree sprayed or treated. I've just never researched what should be done.

You don't have to do anything special. Just shell them and they are ready to roast or bake with or eat raw.

Anyone wanting pecans should email me at becca7376@yahoo.com. I will be happy to get you some pecans as long as they are available.

How wonderful that you can grow pecans! So cute about Buddy eating pecans and pears, and not getting sick! I remember the monsoons from when we lived in Florida..it rained everyday about the same time late in the afternoon. Hurricanes..you better get prepared..although it has been a quiet season so far:)
