I'm Still Here

Just wanted to let you all know I'm still here and kicking. There just hasn't been anything going on here lately. Thankfully we have begun to have our regular summertime thunderstorms in the afternoons and that is bringing a relief from the heat and humidity as the temps drop into the mid 80's. I set out this morning to take some photos of the gardens and as you can see by the next photograph after taking this one I gave it up.

The humidity fogged up my glasses and the camera as soon as I set foot outside this morning. Here I was gonna show you just how pitiful my gardens are looking. Due to the extreme drought and due to the lack of rain in May and June my plants have suffered like I've never seen before. The plants are now taking on some buds and reblooming but the foliage near the ground - beneath the mounds are nothing but dried and pitiful looking foliage. There is no foliage on the bottoms of some of my plants but are showing growth and new leaves towards to tops.

This time of year I hardly find myself in the gardens. There isn't much going on and I'm not into moving any plants in weather this hot. But...can you guess what I've been doing... perusing the catalogs and planning my gardens for next spring. My poor planning this year is obvious. But next year I am planning on bigger and much better variety of blooms. I love this stage of the game - the planning.

Hope you have a great day everyone.

Becca, I can totally relate to not much going on. It is the same here...going to wait till after our vacation to start my seeds. I can't ask the house sitter to take care of 9 chickens, gardens, dog, cat and water my starts. :) I too love the planning. Here in AZ we have two short seasons, so we get to plan twice a year--one warm and one cool season. Glad it has cooled off for you~

I don't even want to look at my garden right now, let alone set foot in it. The drought continues here in eastern NC, and it's just too damn hot and humid. Bleah. Once September rolls around, I'll get out there again :P

I know all about drought, we have had nothing since March and as July and August are generally dry anyway... Please send us some of your afternoon thunderstorms :-) Take care Diane

Gardeners can't help but to continue looking at the possibilities. Your Hydrangea bloom is beautiful.

There's something about unremitting heat that I find so discouraging. The thunder showers are always welcome, but it seems that they provide just a few moments of relief. Your hydrangea is lovely and I hope you find some moments of beauty in your garden. You've certainly shared some here :-)

Hi Becca, It's great to hear from you. I agree about the hot summers. There's not much we can do in the yard this time of year either. We try to 'weed' --but even that is hard...

BUT--isn't it wonderful what some water can do to flowers and plants???? Glad you are getting some rain.
Hugs,
Betsy

This heat is repressive and I know how hard it is to get outside in it. I get out on my flower garden before 7:30 am or not at all. We have been having more rain lately thankfully. I am glad you enjoy the planning and can do that now. Stay cool. ♥O

Since the heat is making us melt I guess the plants are suffering also. The hydrangea is looking pretty. I love planning new garden beds to. I think I am running out of spots to make more Becca. LOL! Take care.

Becca,

We are all in the same boat, storm after storm here, damage, etc. I am trying to hang in there with the watering and the clean up.

Becca, it is amazing that we have gotten so much more rain than y'all! My hydrangeas now have brown spots from so much rain. :(

Happy to read that you are okay! Not doing much gardening here either, taking a few cuttings for rooting purposes that's about it. I sometimes let my camera sit outside in the humidity to acclimate to the conditions, seems to help with the lense fogging up.

Becca hopefully cooler weather and some rain is heading your way soon.. cause if your glasses fog up when you step outside that is way too hot! Enjoy your planning half the fun of gardening dreaming of the garden to come

Hey Becca, nice to see you back! July and August are hard on gardens. I read that the nutrients in the soil are pretty much depleted by this time of year, so fertilizer and deep watering helps. I'm gonna try it and see what happens. It's just hard to be to ambitious when it's so hot!

Take care,

Susan
