Gorgeous Sky

While driving yesterday I saw a beautiful cloud formation. I couldn't resist the clouds dancing across the sky like pieces of lace. Oh and the blue of the sky is for real. It was a beautiful day with temps around 55 degrees.

A new addition to my plants. A succulent. I am wanting some hens and chicks for my container garden this spring. I will place the succulents on the ground in with the stones I plan to add. I think it will add interesting texture and color to a container garden covered with rock or stone.

My seedlings are reaching for the window so hard. I thinned them out last night - but I was thinking and ya'll help me out here - if I leave a good number of lettuce seedlings that the clumps of lettuce would be better than thinning too much. I had to find something that would work for me till I could do better to get these seedlings to grow straight up - I used a file folder and covered it will foil facing the window. I'll be able to tell this evening if this is going to work.

You can see in this photo the seedlings reaching for the light in the window. And this is after I thinned them.

He hangs around very close when I have the camera in hand.

I'll catch you guys later today on your blogs. Have a great day and stay warm and think green. It'll be here soon.

I don't know if this is any help (I love the folders/tin foil mash-up) but one gardening friend I know allows a portable fan to blow on her seedlings for part of the day to strengthen them. Apparently they need the wind moving them to "muscle up". I can see where it might dry out the soil but you can always add water.

I think I have that same succulent sitting in the garden..I have purchased three containers of hens and chicks, the first one died, the second one is struggling and the third, well it might make it. I got an old tire and I am going to fill the center with dirt, succulents, sedum.....rocks and colored pebbles...it should be cute. I do know that your seedlings need some sort of air circulation...and check your email please, before my mail lady comes, LOL.

I love succulents. They are usually very easy to take care of. I couldn't tell you about lettuce. It doesn't grow well here (I am told). I've never grown any. We should hit low 50's today, and pushing 60 by Friday! If I can't have snow, then those temps will work. Have a great day!

Well isn't that a clever way to add more light to your seedlings. Wonderful idea Becca.
Buddy looks so much better with a clean face but he looked so ornery with his muddy face. LOL

Hi Becca, I love those cloud formations... Amazing, aren't they????

You are doing great with your seedlings. We have had alot of good luck with chicks and hens--so hopefully you will also.

Your Buddy is precious. Loved him in the last post with dirt all over his face. What a cutie.
Hugs,
Betsy

Becca those are some great clouds you got pictures of. How creative to get light to your seedlings. Very good.

How exciting to see those seedlings now! I'm never very good about thinning, I hate to pull anything alive out. I've left lettuce pretty close together, as they get a little bigger you could eat the thinnings.

Becca, I LOVE that sky picture with the scalloped clouds running across that very bright blue sky. That is a stunning picture. Your seedlings look like they are doing very well! I think Buddy must like to pose for the camera. He should. He's very photogenic!

What a darling little dog.

I don't have much luck starting seeds inside--not enough light in any of my windows to keep the seedlings going.

To get seedlings to grow straight, have you tried turning the trays every day or two? That might help. The foil might be good because it will make the area brighter all over. Good luck.

That sky picture is beautiful! I'm finding that I've been posting pictures of beautiful skies a lot lately...maybe it's just because I'm tired of that gloomy cold snap :D

What an ingenious invention! This is certainly a cheaper method than buying grow lights. I'm just not sure it would work well enough in a larger application like.....15 acres :)

Becca, I just worry that you will cause your seedling to get lanky and too tall reaching for that light. It might work best if you could buy a florescent light to hand just over the seedlings. I bought cheap plastic shelves (bookcase) and attached the light to the under-part of the shelves. It works pretty well.

Buddy is such a cutie, Becca- no wonder he likes to have his picture taken! *giggle*
I tried the indoor greenhouse a couple of years ago- my lettuce and tomatos did good but the tomatoes really took off once I planted them outside... the lettuce? Uh... not so good. I may try again this year.
I hope you get lots of hens and chicks- I have 2 pots overflowing with chicks right now- I need to thin them out bad!
