Tornadoes and Cottage Flora Thursday

Did anyone see this post before I changed it. I had Bloomin Tuesday on the title. Duh Rebecca check the calendar. Today is Thursday.

The tornado destruction in Alabama is widespread. There are 128 deaths in Alabama this morning. There are a number of bloggers in the Birmingham area and north. This year it has been so bad all across the middle of the country all the way to the southern parts of Alabama and to the Atlantic. My heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones. I know that everyone is praying for these people as I am.

It feels a little bit somber this morning but I'm going to share a couple of blooms today. I'm joining Tracie over at Fishtail Cottage for Flora Thursday. http://fishtailcottage.blogspot.com/2011/04/cottage-flora-17.html
I was so delighted when I caught this bloomin this morning. I'd been watching the bud for several days. Finally it popped and it is beautiful. Sorry about the blur. The wind was blowing the flowers so they were hard to capture.

I'm enjoying the penta.

See the vacant area here - this is where I had dahlias last year. All of them are no shows this year. The ones you see were planted this year. I put down 6 new bulbs earlier this year. I can't figure out why they didn't come back.Could a hard prune in the fall cause this? I did cut them back good when they had bloomed out in the fall.

My first shasta daisy on plants I had threatened to pull up. The plants are huge and need to put out some blooms before I get disheartened with it.

I am feeling the need itch desire gotta have more feeling I get so often this time of year. I will be making a trip to a garden center somewhere to find some more blooming beauties. A new garden area may have to go in to accomodate them. Ya'll know how I hate to put in a new garden - NOT. I love it.

Let me say something about sprinklers you hook up to a garden hose. Why is it I end up buying and having untold number of sprinklers only to have them work a month or so and sometime not that long. I don't buy the cheapest ones. I've bought expensive ones too and they eventually don't work. What's the deal. Have you found a great sprinkler that may last for more than a couple of months? Tell me about it.

Well I'm done. Hope you all have a wonderful day. Pray for those who have lost family members and lost their homes.

Becca, I'm so glad to hear you are OK. I've been hearing so much about the tornadoes and have been wondering how everyone fared through the storms. Your flowers are so pretty. The penta are such a pretty color.

Hey Becca,

Have been thinking about you all night and morning and was so glad to see you post.

FIL called last night to let us know that all the family we have in AL is ok and the storm had passed them...Though I am about to call and check to see how they are doing today.

If you get an answer about the sprinkler please let me know, hubby grumbles and cries about the same thing each year...He actually drives me nuts with it and has been banded this year from mentioning his new sprinkler AT ALL lol.

Blessings Kelsie

My heart goes out to those affected by the tornadoes. Glad you're fine. I know that 'want more' feeling - it comes as spring is arriving - we are more anxious than mother nature! The best sprinkler I've found so far is the old-fashioned 'tractor' kind that has the rotating spray on top. It runs along a hose - just set it and it runs itself down the hose. You have to remember to turn it off.

The storms this spring have been wild......... Dalhias in this part of the country have to be dug every fall and replanted in the spring can't take any cold..... Good luck on the sprinkler .. none seem reliable.

Hi Becca, Just glad you are okay after the storms. We are also--but it was a traumatic day for us.

Your flowers are beautiful. Ours are kinda-beat-down today (after the storms of yesterday). BUT--they'll come back I'm sure...

Take care my friend.
Hugs,
Betsy

I am glad you are ok..the storms sound very scary.
Dahlias are very tender tubers..up here we dig them in the fall and overwinter them in a cool dry place and then replant them in the spring. They cannot take freezing temperatures.
Your other blooms are coming along nicely:)

Glad you are safe and sound. Our family is thinking of those who are enduring loss and hardship.
A lot of folks pull out their dahlia's over the winter and keep them in a burlap bag with sawdust or wood shavings. I hear they do not like to be too wet. I am too lazy to do this and if they can't survive a wet PNW winter, I'll find ones that do ;)

Love working in the garden too. As for the sprinklers I think it is because it is all made to cheaply now. All junk.

Such a relief to discover that you and yours are all ok having heard about the terrible storms.

I, too, love a new garden spot. What pretty blooms starting at your place. Here, in East Texas, dahlia bulbs melt in our summer heat, or don't get enough cold in the winter to do their thing again. They are annuals here. My heart aches for the victims of these storms. I'm afraid more is on the way. Stay safe Becca!

We are barely coming out from under a blanket of snow up here in Canada. I was in a white out blizzard in Calgary on Thursday, going from garden center to garden center checking on my plants.

Hope that all our gardens bloom gloriously this summer.

glad to hear you are safe...your flowers still look just wonderful in spite of the poor weather!

I think the best sprinkler we bought was a little cheapy that screwed onto the hose and makes a little round spray. Still have two of them and use them all the time.

Becca glad you are ok too. We went through the same storms, but wasn't as bad as what Ala. experienced! Be safe, for more are in the forcast. Let's pray they are not as bad! Hugs!

I am so glad you are OK. My heart just breaks when I see pictures of the devastation.

I have also had trouble with sprinklers. I usually just get the whirly kind. They last a few year. My husband sometimes repairs them. Good luck finding a good one.
