The Year Was 1955

The year was 1955. September 28 to be exact. Fifty five years ago. I am turning 55 tomorrow. I don't usually like to call attention to myself normally letting birthdays go by with only a mention from family. But today I am feeling nostalgic and just wanted to share some things and tidbits you don't know about me.

This of course is my baby pic. Born at the Mobile General Hospital. The hospital doesn't exist now but is now known as the University of South Alabama hospital. The building that housed the General hospital is now a Dept of Health bldg - A Historic Building.

1956 my mother and me
just learned to walk - this is 1956

This is 1960. We were living in California for a couple of years.

Me on the left, Bonnie on the right and Teri in the middle. I am the oldest of 5 brothers and sisters.

part of the photo of 1st grade class of 61-62 in Santa Clara CA. I am second from left middle row here

Here at age 13 me on the right. Labor Day Celebration. Back in these days Labor day was all about the local unions. Mobile had many big plants with large unions.

Excerpt from the speech from Gov Wallace - my interest here is the tone of the speech and well this just sounds so silly to read it today. Check out the second paragraph here. Doesn't sound lawful at all.

This is 1972 in San Francisco with my father and my sweet little April on the way. Here I was 6 months along.

This is 1973 one month after April was born. Here I am at my mothers in Saraland Alabama (Mobile)

This is my first 5k run/walk. This is Sept 1995 at the Hurricane Run on Dauphin Island.

This is my last 5k in Saraland AL. Improved a good ten minutes. I wish I'd never stopped.

This is today. Many years older and wiser.

A few tidbits you don't know about me:

I am the daughter of a preacher.
I lost seventy pounds.
I have 2 children.
I began bookkeeping in 1978.
I got a GED and attended college beginning in 1984.
I became a full time student in 1994 for a nursing career and then decided to go back to bookkeeping.
I was a Sunday School teacher.
I have been single for 9 years.
I have six grandchildren, 4 boys and 2 girls.

Hope you all have a blessed day.
I

Becca what a great post. I loved reading it and enjoyed all of the old pictures. Don't ya just love our 'big' hair back then. Call me not able to change with the times so good but I still love it. Although mine is all wacked off now and I like a lot of the new styles too.
Great post! Happy early birthday and I'll be back to tell ya on the right day too. ;-)

Oh Becca Sweetie...
Happy Early Birthday. I am so tickled that you shared these wonderful Kodak moments, oh Becca they are so precious. You are as beautiful today as you were from a baby. I love these photo shares.

I did not know you were a runner, what an accomplishment that was. And you have lost 70 pounds, sweet friend, I think my insulin has helped me find it.

A daughter of a preacher. Now I think that would be fun. And on the grandkid field I have you beat by 2 sweetie. We had our precious James born in June, he is number 8, and sadly the last of the Smiths. Unless of course there is a miracle.

Oh I have SO enjoyed my visit today. You are a wonderful friend sweetie. Love the picture of you. Just beautiful. Here is wishing a Happy Birthday, may all your wishes come true, and here is to many, many more to come. Many hugs and much love, Sherry

Hi Becca. Thanks so much for sharing with us. I have puffy hair pictures too. LOL! We thought they were so wonderful back then. Mine is puffy now too but I pick out the curls because my hair is so thin these days. LOL!
You have a wonderful day tomorrow on your Birthday. May it be filled with family, friends, love and many, many flowers.

What a treat to see all your memories by the way of the photos. You should be very proud of the weight you have lost I know it takes a lot of willpower. I have 10 grandchildren and they are such an important part of my life as I know yours must be to you. Have a Happy Birthday.

What a gorgeous woman... Happy Birthday, Becca.... I LOVE LOVE LOVE reading posts like this. It helps me to know my blog friends better.

Do you have sisters and brothers close by??? I was the youngest of 3 kids --and now, I'm the only one left in my immediate family... Gets sad sometimes for me.

You are so lucky to have kept your weight OFF... I have never been able to do that... My adult problem--all through the years. Oh Well.

I love all of your pictures --but my fav is the cute little one where you are just learning to walk. You are so proud of yourself.

Thanks so much --and I hope you have a great birthday.
Hugs,
Betsy

Well, Happy (belated) Birthday to you, Becca! I enjoyed your post very much. A while ago, another blogger 'tagged' me with the Honest Scrap award, but I still haven't written a post to go with it! Your post reminds me that I need to follow through with that! I was born in 1957, and also have 2 kids...but mind weren't born until 1988 and 1996! I could be a grandma by now...but I'm still busy with a 13 yr old at home. My daughter needs to finish her last year of college, get a job, get married, etc (hopefully in that order)! before that day will come for me;-)
